Don't dilly-dally

Although I'm a dedicated lover of English, I'm also a big fan of Afrikaans - it's full of fabulous words and phrases, many of which confer meaning in much richer, more expressive ways than their English equivalents. But sometimes translations go wonderfully awry, as in this sign at a shopping centre in Malmesbury.

One of the English translations of the Afrikaans word 'slentery' (pronounced 'slen-tah-ray') is indeed 'sauntering', but in this context it should have been 'loitering'. Still, I love the idea that anyone visiting the De Bron Centre is required to put their shoulders back and walk smartly.

Student life

My daughter is in her third year of varsity in a neighbouring town. She shares a flat with a friend. This is their freezer.

(The ice tray is empty. I bought her the sorbet.)
